Pristine beaches, reminiscent of French colonial rule and the culture, Pondicherry owes the legacy of Prime tourist spot in India union. Presently the Pondicherry town, capital of the union territory, is known as Pondicherry and the word means” new town” popularly known as ”pony” it is a destination for those who want to enjoy a fun filled holiday away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Beaches in Pondicherry

Until recently, the length of the Pondicherry coastline boasted broad, beautiful sandy beaches. As a result of extreme coastal erosion triggered by the building of a harbour at Ariyankuppam to the south of the town, almost all Pondicherry's beach has been lost. Today, the Pondicherry shoreline consists of a seawall of riprap boulders and is unsuitable for swimming or strolling.

Promenade Beach
Promenade Beach was once the most popular beach in Pondicherry, and a delight to both tourists and locals alike. The Promenade is on Beach Road (also known as Goubert Avenue), one of the main boulevard's of the town.The entire heritage town is within walking distance of the Promenade. Paradise beach is located 8 km south of the town, along the Pondicherry-Cuddalore Highway. This beach can be accessed from the Chunnambar Resort. Flanked by an estuary on one side, the beach can only be accessed by boat.

Auroville
Auroville beach is close to Auroville, 12 km north of the town, off the East Coast Road. Its shallow waters and small waves make it a popular place for swimming. Much of this long stretch of beach has been lost to erosion caused by the construction of groynes along the coast to the south.
